Back Country Camping-State Line Campground

Maryland, USA

5.0
Stayed at Pope Bay doing a kayak tour of the Assateague Back Country. The place is nice but you need to make sure you have enough food and water to stay. Hammock tents are not ideal for any of the campsites as there are no places to hang them, and they damage trees. If you are kayaking or canoeing the backcountry, make sure to bring a map and GPS. Cell service is available, and you shouldn't get lost if you are prepared. Very clean and well taken care of outhouses and campsites. Trails into campsites could use a weedwhacking. Be prepared to get up close and personal with wildlife. - Matt Snyder

Location and Accessibility: Nestled in Assateague's Wilderness

Back Country Camping-State Line Campground is located within Maryland, specifically as part of the Assateague Island National Seashore. This places it in a prime position on one of Maryland's most cherished natural treasures. Assateague Island is a barrier island renowned for its pristine beaches, diverse wildlife, and, most famously, its wild horses. State Line Campground, like other backcountry sites on Assateague, is not directly accessible by vehicle; rather, it typically requires hiking or paddling to reach. This inherent remoteness is a defining characteristic of backcountry camping and contributes significantly to the feeling of solitude and immersion in nature.

The exact location within Assateague means campers will need to be prepared for the journey. For those arriving from mainland Maryland, accessing Assateague Island usually involves crossing the bridge from the mainland. Once on the island, a permit is required for backcountry camping, which is typically obtained from the Ranger Station. The journey to State Line Campground might involve walking along the beach or bay-side trails. This intentional effort to reach the campsite helps preserve its wild character and ensures that those who seek it are genuinely looking for a wilderness experience. The name "State Line" also implies its proximity to the Maryland-Virginia border on Assateague Island, hinting at a unique geographical position that might offer varied perspectives of the island's landscape. For Maryland locals, this means a significant wild experience is within reach, requiring planning but delivering immense natural rewards.

Services Offered: Essential Provisions for Primitive Camping

As a backcountry campground, Back Country Camping-State Line Campground provides fundamental services geared towards a primitive and self-sufficient experience. Campers should manage expectations and understand that extensive facilities like those found in developed campgrounds are not available. The services focus on basic necessities and environmental preservation:

  • Chemical Toilets: Maintained outhouses are provided at the campsites for waste disposal, ensuring sanitation in the wilderness. Customer reviews confirm these are "very clean and well taken care of."
  • Picnic Tables: Each designated campsite typically includes a picnic table, offering a stable surface for meal preparation and dining.
  • Fire Rings: Designated fire rings are usually present, allowing for safe campfires (subject to current park regulations and fire bans).
  • Designated Campsites: While primitive, the campsites are clearly marked to help minimize human impact on the delicate island ecosystem. These sites are designed to accommodate tent camping.
  • No Potable Water: Crucially, there is no fresh, potable water available at the backcountry sites. Campers must pack in all their own drinking water, or have means to filter and purify natural sources if they are available and suitable.
  • No Electricity or Hookups: There are no electrical outlets or hookups for RVs or trailers. This is a tent-only camping experience emphasizing self-reliance.

One customer review noted that "Trails into campsites could use a weedwhacking," indicating that while the campsites and outhouses are well-maintained, the access trails might be more rugged, consistent with a backcountry setting.
