This geographical nuance is important for local users planning their visit.
Regardless of the specific borough, the "Gateway" in its name correctly points to its affiliation with the expansive Gateway National Recreation Area. This federal park system provides vast stretches of protected natural environments, coastal habitats, and recreational opportunities within the metropolitan area. The strategic placement of Camp Gateway offers an incredible balance: the feeling of being in the great outdoors while maintaining remarkably easy access to the vibrant heart of New York City.
Accessibility to Manhattan from this campground is a significant highlight, as noted by visitors. It is conveniently located near the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, which connects Brooklyn to Staten Island. For direct access to Manhattan, visitors can drive a short distance to the Staten Island Ferry terminal. The Staten Island Ferry itself is a quintessential New York experience – it's free, operates 24/7, and offers breathtaking, unobstructed views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and the Lower Manhattan skyline. This means campers can enjoy a campfire under the stars and then, within an hour, be exploring Times Square, Broadway, or the museums of Manhattan, a truly unparalleled urban camping advantage.

Camp Gateway - Staten Island stands as a remarkably suitable and appealing option for locals in the New York region, offering a distinct blend of outdoor escape and urban convenience that is rarely found elsewhere. Its suitability stems from several key factors that directly address the desires and constraints often faced by New Yorkers.
Firstly, for any New Yorker yearning for a connection with nature, the primary barrier is often distance. A weekend getaway to a traditional campground usually entails several hours of driving, dealing with traffic, and significant fuel costs. Camp Gateway - Staten Island effectively eliminates much of this friction. While its address in Brooklyn might initially surprise some, its proximity to the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge and the Staten Island Ferry makes it incredibly accessible within the five boroughs. This means less time commuting and more time enjoying the outdoors, making it an ideal choice for a spontaneous overnight stay or a quick weekend retreat without a major travel commitment. It offers that feeling of being in the "great outdoors" that many crave, but without leaving the city's boundaries.
Secondly, the campground provides a highly economical alternative to typical New York City accommodations. Hotels in Manhattan, and even in many parts of Brooklyn, can be prohibitively expensive. Camp Gateway offers a significantly more budget-friendly way to experience the city, whether you're hosting out-of-town guests who prefer an unconventional stay, or you're a local looking for an affordable staycation that feels like a true escape. The ability to bring your own tent or RV, coupled with the availability of essential amenities like public showers and electricity, provides a comfortable and cost-effective base for exploring everything New York has to offer.
Finally, the unique fusion of nature and city life is what truly sets Camp Gateway apart for locals. Imagine spending your day exploring world-class museums, catching a Broadway show, or dining in a renowned restaurant, and then returning to your campsite to enjoy a campfire under the stars. The added bonus of a free ferry ride offering iconic views of the Statue of Liberty as part of your commute to Manhattan is an experience in itself, turning travel into an attraction. This ability to easily pivot from urban adventure to natural tranquility makes Camp Gateway - Staten Island not just a place to stay, but a truly integrated part of a diverse New York City experience, perfectly suited for those who want the best of both worlds.

Jul 16, 2024 · Gheorghe Curelet-BalanThe campsite was well-maintained and offered all the basic amenities that I needed for a comfortable stay. The location was perfect, providing easy access to the city while still feeling like I was in the great outdoors. I loved being able to enjoy a campfire under the stars while still being just a short drive away from all the city's attractions.
Mar 27, 2023 · Alex SherIf I could give 50 stars, I would. This is simply one of the loveliest and most pleasant camping experiences I've ever had. If you're feeling that $30 is a little steep for tent camping and are wondering why the price tag, just go for it-- you will soon realize that you're getting your money's worth and more! First off, free firewood every night is just amazing. Being surrounded by nature and cut-off from the daily noise but still being in New York City is just amazing. Walking distance to the abandoned Fort Collins and South Beach-- amazing. There are seven cozy campsites, each with a tent pad and fire pit/ grill. There are great showers and bathrooms. Plenty of shade. And most of all, the rangers are some of the most dedicated, helpful, knowledgeable, and just plain friendly that you will ever find. Especially ranger Kathy, who took great care of us during our two-night stay. Lots of tourists do utilize this campground, so be sure to book your stay in advance. There is nothing I would change about this campsite!
Jul 16, 2017 · Joe CorreiaThe batteries and fort are beautiful and worth checking out. Very cool. Of course the view of the Verrazano and Narrows are spectacular. The campground itself looked pretty, didn't get to check out the bathrooms. The only downside is, the beach is absolutely disgusting, even for one on Staten Island. Tampon applicators everywhere along with other debris. You could see the garbage floating in the water everywhere. Spiders on the beach as well!We had been planning to spend one night at the campground and much of the day before on the beach, but I will be cancelling the reservation because the beach is far too gross to spend any amount of time on. I know there's not much that can be done with the water because it's from the harbor, but at least they could clean the beach every so often so families can use it.
Jul 10, 2018 · Madeline T.Amazing views of my beloved Brooklyn in a beautiful natural setting it's so far into the base that it is on water in the edge of the forest. I watched a deer much away all day on the beach grass. Only complaint is that "hot" water was not even close to hot so plan your showering accordingly! Best $30 stay in NYC
