FamCamp Introduce
Hello, Maryland military families and authorized personnel! Are you seeking a convenient and affordable camping option that keeps you close to the resources of Joint Base Andrews and the vibrant attractions of Washington D.C.? FamCamp, located at 4520 Wheeling Rd, Clinton, MD 20735, USA, offers a unique opportunity for those with base access to enjoy a camping experience with the comforts of home, right here in the heart of Maryland. It’s a dedicated space designed for active duty military, retired military, DoD civilians, DoD contractors, and their dependents with valid ID, providing a valuable amenity for our service community.
FamCamp at Joint Base Andrews is more than just a place to park your RV; it's a practical and budget-friendly solution for temporary lodging or a weekend getaway. While it may sometimes receive mixed feedback regarding maintenance and staffing, its core value lies in its prime location and the essential services it provides for its specific user base. It offers an alternative to hotels, allowing for a more communal and often more economical stay while visiting the D.C. area or participating in base activities. For Maryland-based service members and their families, FamCamp represents a convenient and accessible option to enjoy the outdoors and utilize base facilities without venturing far from their duties or homes.
FamCamp is strategically located at 4520 Wheeling Rd, Clinton, MD 20735, USA, placing it directly on Joint Base Andrews. This location is a significant advantage for its intended users – military personnel and authorized guests – as it offers immediate access to all base services and a secure environment. For Maryland residents with base access, this means an exceptionally convenient drive from their homes to their camping destination, minimizing travel time and maximizing relaxation.
The campground is nestled within the base, often described as being adjacent to the golf course, which can contribute to a pleasant setting. Its proximity to major roadways around Joint Base Andrews allows for relatively easy navigation, although guests should be aware of base access procedures and gate hours. From FamCamp, accessing Washington D.C. and its myriad attractions, such as the National Mall, museums, and historical sites, is quite manageable. While some road and aircraft noise is to be expected due to its location on an active base and near roadways (Old Alexandria Ferry Rd is noted as being very close), the convenience of staying on base and the short distance to public transportation (like the Green Line Branch Avenue Metro station, approximately 5 miles away) make it an excellent staging area for exploring the greater D.C. metropolitan area. This blend of on-base convenience and access to urban centers makes FamCamp a highly practical choice for locals seeking a well-positioned temporary home.
FamCamp at Joint Base Andrews provides a range of essential services and amenities, primarily catering to RV campers, with some provisions for tent camping:
- RV Sites with Hookups: The campground offers a number of RV sites, typically with concrete pads, and provides full hookups (30 and 50 amp electric, water, and sewer connections) or partial hookups (electric only).
- Tent Sites: While primarily RV-focused, some tent sites are also available for traditional camping.
- Bathhouse Facilities: A bathhouse is on-site, providing restrooms and showers for campers. However, past reviews indicate that these facilities may be older and sometimes require maintenance or attention to cleanliness.
- Laundry Facilities: Coin-operated laundry machines are available within the campground. Recent reviews suggest that the condition and availability of working machines can be inconsistent.
- WiFi: Wireless internet access is generally offered at the campground, though past user feedback indicates it can be unreliable or of poor quality.
- Picnic Tables and Fire Rings: Individual campsites are equipped with picnic tables and fire rings for outdoor dining and campfires, though local fire bans should always be observed.
- Access to Base Amenities: Staying at FamCamp grants campers access to Joint Base Andrews' wider facilities, which can include the Commissary, Exchange, golf courses (The Course at Andrews), fitness centers, and various MWR (Morale, Welfare, and Recreation) programs.
- Pet-Friendly: Pets are generally allowed at the campground, but owners are expected to follow base rules regarding leashing and waste disposal. Some reviews mention issues with fleas and ticks, suggesting proactive measures.

FamCamp Reviews
WiFi was terrible/useless. They don’t keep the grass cut. They do a half way job. The camp host was not ever available & was told they are not that friendly. They are not there, when you need them. No one around to ask questions. All three washing machines were broken. No one was very friendly. Not kept very clean. Men’s showers were filthy. Someone peed all over the floor. No one to tell to clean it up. Just needs some updating & clean up. Also, aloof road noise. Very loud traffic. Very bad noise. Hope they improve.
Jul 25, 2025 · Teresa N. AbstonWe have stayed at numerous military campgrounds and this BY FAR is the most run down, over grown and rudest Outdoor Rec office staff we have encountered. The grass is literally over a foot tall or more in areas everywhere. Picnic table falling apart, water being shut off without notification, staff in office very passive aggressive when asked basic questions. When checking in, I very politely asked when the grass would be cut and response was “Sir, it’s been raining. We can’t cut the grass in the rain.” By the length of the grass, it has not been cut in an VERY long time! Extremely noisy due to road next to camp ground. This campground is a disgrace.
May 16, 2024 · Keith NealThis place is low awful, grass not cut, standing water all around the pad, and the pot holes are everywhere. Not up to military standards!
Apr 01, 2025 · Ben CahnRV spots are concrete pads, area is spacious, FHU was $45. Many empty spots. Two washers($1.50) and two dryers($1). All of them worked well. Kids enjoyed doing a puzzle and playing with a mousetrap boardgame thats available in TV lounge. However the TV lounge has a lot of cobweb and dust. Pool table had no balls and covered in spiderwebs. Water heater in laundry room is spilling water. Toilets and showers were disgusting. There was trash on our site. Huge garbage bag in fire pit and grass growing in another. Water was leaking from the spigot in the empty campsite next to us. Campground is not taken care of.
Nov 01, 2022 · La Familia HenryUpon arrival the park seems overgrown and outdated. There are clear signs and directives posted. The sites are overgrown and not well maintained. Outside of the concrete pad the sites are overgrown and not campchair friendly even around the sites fire pits. The area is dog friendly however the dog park is very small and mostly accommodating to smaller dogs. The general bathrooms and laundry rooms have spiders. The perks of the camping area is its closeness to the base and surrounding areas. There are no kids playgrounds located in the area.
