Mullica River Campground

Hammonton, NJ 08037, USA

4.0
This is one of my favorite campgrounds within Wharton State Park. I’ve been to most of them and although you will likely not have any cell service, it’s the perfect get away. Unlike most of the site which are fairly close to roads and other homes, this is about a 15 minute drive directly in nature. The camp site are fairly large and reasonably spaced out. If you’re near site 1-5 you’ll be really close to a potable water source and there are various outhouses spread out. They are very well maintained and stocked with toilet paper and at least one of them is fairly new and spotless. The river is also really close to camp site 1-3, there’s several shores that are easily accessed. The water is only a few feet deep and has a nice consistent flow, like a natural massage. You could almost use it as an infinity pool depending on the current. Depending on the time of year, there are blueberry bushes all around sometimes packed with free blueberries. At night, the sky is super clear and you can hardly hear anything besides nature. You may see people kayaking by periodically but it’s the most peaceful campsite I’ve been to so far within Wharton. I’d highly recommend if you are not worried about cell service and want to be completely disconnected. Depending on your service provider, you may be able to get 1 bar here and there. - Chris P.

Location and Accessibility

Mullica River Campground is located in Hammonton, NJ 08037, right within the expansive Wharton State Park. While the address provides a general area, it's important for prospective campers to understand that this is not a roadside campground. Accessibility to Mullica River Campground is part of its charm, contributing to its secluded feel. To reach the heart of the campground, be prepared for about a 15-minute drive directly into the natural landscape. This journey itself sets the tone for your rustic adventure, leaving the urban sprawl behind and ushering you into the serene embrace of the Pine Barrens.

For those who enjoy a more active approach, the campground is also accessible via hiking trails. As noted by some visitors, there's a great walk to the campsite from the visitor's center, typically a little over 4 miles. This makes it an ideal spot for backpackers or those who wish to combine their camping trip with a scenic trek through the park. While the remote location ensures a peaceful environment, it also means that cell service can be spotty, if available at all. Depending on your service provider, you might occasionally catch a single bar, but for the most part, be ready to be completely disconnected – which, for many, is precisely the appeal of Mullica River Campground. This intentional detachment from digital distractions allows for a deeper appreciation of the natural surroundings.
