Oceanside Drive-In Campground Introduce
For Maryland locals dreaming of a unique coastal escape, where the lull of ocean waves is your nightly soundtrack and wild ponies roam freely, Oceanside Drive-In Campground on Assateague Island is the quintessential destination. This isn't just a campground; it's an immersive natural experience that connects you directly with the captivating beauty of Maryland's barrier island. Perfect for those who crave a true outdoor adventure with the convenience of being able to drive right up to their site, it promises unforgettable mornings and serene evenings by the Atlantic.
Oceanside Drive-In Campground offers a rare opportunity to camp literally steps from the Atlantic Ocean. Unlike many traditional campgrounds, its primary allure lies in its unparalleled beachfront location and the mesmerizing presence of Assateague's famous wild horses. It caters to campers who seek a genuine connection with nature, prioritizing stunning views and unique wildlife encounters over extensive modern amenities. While the experience is rustic, the chance to wake up to the sunrise over the ocean and observe the wild ponies from your campsite makes it an extraordinary and highly sought-after destination for anyone looking to truly get away from it all and embrace the raw beauty of coastal Maryland. It's a place where the simplicity of camping meets the grandeur of a protected national seashore.
Oceanside Drive-In Campground is located on the Maryland side of Assateague Island National Seashore, specifically within the area managed by the National Park Service. The exact address associated with the campground's entry point is Berlin, MD 21811, USA, which serves as the gateway to this pristine barrier island.
Accessing the campground is straightforward for those driving. From Berlin, MD, visitors will head towards Assateague Island. Please note that an entrance fee to Assateague Island National Seashore is required in addition to camping fees, or an Interagency Pass (America the Beautiful Pass) can be used. There is no through road connecting the Maryland side of Assateague Island to the Virginia side, so all access to the Maryland district is from the Berlin/Ocean City area.
Once on the island, the campground is clearly marked. Campers with RVs, trailers, or tents can drive directly to their assigned sites. Reviewers often note the ease of finding and navigating to individual campsites within the loops. While the sites are designed for drive-in access, visitors should be aware that the ground is sandy, and some sites may have a steeper, sandier climb to the picnic table and fire pit area, especially for those closer to the beach. Despite this, the accessibility to the stunning oceanfront is a major draw. For a quick breakfast or other necessities, driving back to the state park side of Assateague Island, just a short distance away, is an option, where telling the gate attendant you are going to the restaurant can waive the re-entry fee. This allows for convenient access to additional services while maintaining the secluded feel of the National Seashore.

Oceanside Drive-In Campground Reviews
Listening to the ocean while in the tent at night was perfect the morning sun was fantastic and the wild horses were fun to watch. My daughter and I can't wait to go back.
Mar 29, 2025 · Cityblazein SantiagoBeautiful place to camp, pros and cons tho. Stayed in A18, steep sandy climb to table and fire pit. By July the sand is mostly covering the concrete pad, as it was in almost all the outside/beach side sites in the loop. If you want less sand try to stay on the inside sites of the loop. Showers are absolutely freezing, even on a very warm day. Horses frequently walked the loop, saw them multiple times from our campsite. If you need a quick breakfast, drive back up to the state park side and tell them you're just going to the restaurant and they won't charge you to get in & the food is great.
Jul 13, 2024 · Ally PaynterOnly stayed for 1 night. I enjoyed my stay.Horses walked right past my site (site 32).
Jun 05, 2025 · Laura PFirst time camping here and it was an amazing experience! We were immediately met with horses at our campsite and continued to see the same herd during our 3 day stay. Be prepared for cold, windy nights if you're going during cooler months. Our tent was not the best, but the campground was great.
Mar 25, 2024 · Olivia MaysCar camping here is magical. We visited here in Oct and March, and love this campsite so much that we are already planning our next camping trip! It was too windy and cold in March, but early October was perfect. Kayak and bike rentals were not available in March.. We want to do that next time we come and try out the bayside drive in campground also. The oceanside spots we stayed at, in two separate times, were 19 (loop 1) and 30 (loop 2). Both oceanside drive loops are very nice. Site 19 is very spacious but not as close to the water as site 30. It is also a further walk from the bathroom.Site 30 is smaller but it has sand dunes and plants that help block the wind and provide some nice privacy. It is also close to the bathroom but not too close to feel uncomfortable. Site 30 is also right next to the walkway to the beach. People were friendly and many other campers were in their RV/trailers.We drove through the bayside loops and felt the oceanside provided more privacy and were spaced apart better, giving the feeling of having your own little area. Bayside mostly felt like an RV park, but we checked and spotted a couple bayside spots that felt more private and will try those out next time.We prefer visiting during less popular months to avoid large crowds, bugs and the heat. We like the feeling of having the beach to ourselves. We also like company, but just not too much. Some fun activities to do include flying a kite on the beach, Easter egg hunting for the kids in your own campsite, walking the 3 short but beautiful trails, biking, crabbing, kayaking, roasting marshmallows, and more!
