Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals
For New Jersey residents considering a camping trip to the Southern Shore, Shellbay Campground in Cape May Court House offers certain advantages, primarily its location. However, it is paramount for locals to approach their decision with a clear and comprehensive understanding of recent guest experiences to ensure their expectations align with what the campground currently delivers.
The main suitability for New Jersey locals lies in Shellbay Campground's strategic proximity to beloved Jersey Shore destinations. Being just a short drive from the beaches and boardwalks of Cape May and Wildwood means less travel time and more vacation time for families. This convenience allows for easy access to a wide array of attractions, from historical sites and quaint shops to thrilling rides and sandy shores, making it a practical base for exploring the best of Cape May County without venturing too far from home.
Furthermore, the availability of both tent and RV sites caters to diverse local camping preferences, offering flexibility for different types of outdoor enthusiasts. For those who enjoy a more natural setting, the campground’s location in Green Creek provides a pleasant, potentially shaded environment away from the immediate beachfront crowds, allowing for a more traditional camping feel.
However, it is critically important for New Jersey locals to be aware of the detailed concerns raised in recent customer reviews. Issues such as excessive noise from nearby parties, potentially inconsistent operation or presence of advertised amenities like pools and playgrounds, unkempt facilities (filthy bathrooms, overgrown fishing ponds), and problems with site conditions (poison ivy, mold) are significant red flags. The reported lack of effective management response to these issues, and concerns about security (uncontrolled gate) and insect control (mosquitoes and ticks), directly impact the quality and safety of a family camping experience.
In conclusion, while Shellbay Campground offers an appealing geographical location for New Jersey residents seeking access to the Cape May and Wildwood areas, prospective campers must carefully consider the detailed negative feedback regarding on-site conditions and amenity availability. For locals prioritizing a hassle-free, fully equipped, and consistently well-maintained camping experience, it would be advisable to directly inquire about the current status of all advertised facilities and address specific concerns with management before booking. Comparing it with alternative, potentially more affordable and better-reviewed campgrounds in the area, as suggested by a customer, might also be a prudent step to ensure a truly enjoyable and problem-free New Jersey camping adventure.

Shellbay Campground Reviews
I camped at Shellbay Campground in a tent for four nights this summer with my family of five. My three kids had to sleep in the car until 1 AM one night, because that is when the blasting music, which included a live band, stopped at the graduation party a few hundred feet away. I was informed by a group of discontent RV campers that had huddled together that night that the property of the party, 114 Stagecoach Rd. (South Jersey Sunrooms) is the property of the daughter and son-in-law of the owner of Shellbay Campground. The owner confirmed this information the next morning, and was well aware that the party would take place there that night, and could have suggested that I stayed at a tent site further away. Aside from our troubles that night, one morning my kids got woken up by Steven the bulldog barking at us 10 feet in front of our tent, because there is a dog park right behind tent sites 638 and 637, which is deceitfully not shown on the map. When confronted about the dog park, the owner told me it is a spot for horses, but people take their dogs there sometimes. While I saw no horses, there was a steady stream of dogs. Regardless, if it's accessible to campers, it should be on the campground map. We also used gloves to pull up around 30 small poison ivy plants scattered around tent site 638, upon arrival, and upon departure found a mold with an approximately 4 inch radius growing on rotting wood buried underneath our tent, and had to clean mold off our tent. I had stayed at both Depot Travel Park (has city water) and Adventure Bound Campground the previous year, and would recommend either of them over Shellbay Campground - and they are both cheaper!
Jul 10, 2025 · Ryan KNice campgrounds with well-maintained facilities. Excellent service.
Jul 12, 2025 · Jerome VeeJust stayed here with a friend. Would definitely be back!!!! First of all yes it is a quiet place and some families stay here with kids. Mostly retired people with permanent sites. However, the 20 sites they do rent are nice size and reasonable in price for being close to Stone Harbor, Cape May, and Wildwood! Mix of shaded and some sun areas. Great looking pool, hot tube, and the bathrooms were clean and well maintained. They have two little cabins that probably sleep family of four. The staff were family run and very nice!! Camp store brings me back to childhood memories of a typical camp store. Prices all around very respectable compared to most hotels. The staff were accommodating on our only needing one night but that was for a tent site. Cabins are 2-3 nights. Just bring cash and you will be a happy camper!!!
Jun 18, 2024 · Freddy GFirst off saying this place is very very clean. Very easy on the phone. And this is my first time camping and actually enjoyed it. Everything is close by. It’s pet friendly. And just a lot to do wish I stayed longer a weekend wasn’t enough but had so much fun here. Do it it’s very cute little place. Ps 25 cents for 4 mins for showering was a plus! Very hot water.
Aug 26, 2024 · Chris MadarroA very charming campground, still family owned. Really nice pool and hot tub, great bathroom facilities. The folks in the office are extremely pleasant and helpful. Close to the Cape May Zoo. There is an awesome bike path that is very close. It is at least 8 miles long and pretty much parallels old Rt. 9. It's also 15 minutes from The Wildwoods. Lots of stuff to do from this location.
